The Precision Rifle Series 2017 season opener was held this past weekend March 11-12, 2017 at CORE Shooting solutions in Baker, Florida. This was the 2nd annual Accuracy International Long range classic. I and Caleb Gidcumb from Team HLR arrived at CORE Friday prior to the match. After getting signed in and the layout of the amazing shooting facility that is CORE. We made our way to the 100 Yard zero range and confirmed the HLR 6 Dashers were stilling hammering. Friday afternoon was spent shooting and dry firing off of the CORE barricades. Core shooting solutions is one of the most well thought out and shooter friendly ranges in the country. A shooter can walk the entire firing points and move from a 300 and 500 Yard mover to a 800 yard unknown distance range and several more firing positions. The obstacles and barricades at CORE while not easy are top notch and well maintained. The AI Long range classic consisted of 10 difficult and fun stages. On day one shooters had a 2 minute time limit per stage and no equipment restrictions. On day two the shooter shot the same 10 stages again except time limits were shaved by 30 seconds and shooters could only complete the stage with one shooting bag. This made for some interesting shooting positions and fast pace. The Big Horn actions and Hawkhill barrels were serious work horses. Our team 6 Dashers shot amazing for the entire match and never bobbled. The Vortex Razors in Warne mounts on each gun were spot on the entire match. Our MK Machining throw levers and levels proved to be match worthy standing 2 days of hard use. HLR would like to thank the PRS and CORE shooting solutions for putting on an unbelievable match. We would also like to thank all the match sponsors that contributed to the wonderful prize table. Caleb Gidcumb finished 8th place and I finished 13th place out of 121 shooters that completed.
At HLR we get the question of what brand barrels do you recommend for my build. I usually answer by saying most barrel manufactures are good to go. Then I add I personally shoot Hawk Hill Custom on my guns.
My first gear review is going to be on Hawk Hill Barrels out of Verona, VA. Shawn Burkholder started Hawk Hill Customs to build on his love for long range shooting. Shawn was taught his trade of metal work by his Father in law long time tool and die maker.
My first experience with Hawk Hill was an initial barrel order from a new barrel maker in 2015 for our accuracy demanding sport of long range Bench Rest. The first barrel I pulled out of the box was a custom contour 6mm 1:8 Twist blank. I quickly chambered it for my BAT SV in 6BR. A standard .271 Neck BR would give this barrel a true test and require no special brass forming or neck turning. This combination provides a test to the barrel only and keeps the loading components the constant. This experiment is easily reproducible with standard reloading. Initial testing showed promise and I decided to continue tuning. After a great break in and small test groups at 600 Yards I took this barrel to the 2015 MO State 600 Yard Championship. The barrel shot well dirty or clean bore. My test for this was confirmed during the 2 day match. I cleaned the barrel between relays day 1 netting a 2.095″ group aggregate with the small group being 1.179″. Day 2 I shot the entire match without cleaning and netted a 2.183 aggregate for the 8 targets. I took home the sweep with the 2 gun championship and the rest is history.
Test showed very easy break in and cleaning of every Hawk Hill barrel through the shop.
Concentricity of the bore has been amazing compared to other brands.
The following barrel was shot in my PRS rifle for the 2016 season.
Test Barrel Number 1
6mm Remington Varmint contour 1:8 Twist 26”
0.237 Bore Diameter
6 Dasher HLR reamer 0.272 Neck
Load: 105 Gr Berger Hybrid .015 Jump, 32.6gr Varget, Normal Case, CCI 450 Primer
Initial MV-2920 FPS, ES-9 FPS, SD-4.2 FPS
Initial testing showed great accuracy with new Norma cases at 32.6gr Varget
Documented 2000 rnds on barrel of match shooting.
Another group testing during off season with a new bullet at 0.020” off the lands and a total growth in the throat of 0.050”.
Group pictures shot from concrete bench at 600 Yards in little to no wind. I confirmed these groups with another trip to the range and took them out to 1050 Yards. The 1050 Yard group measured 6.250” and had 4 shots in 4”. A review with the Hawkeye bore scope on this barrel showed mild fire cracking approx 2.5-3″ in front of chamber.
This has been the normal experience with all Hawk Hill blanks. Hawk Hill utilizes cut rifling on 416 Stainless steel blanks. Hawk Hill is committed to quality not quantity. Hawk Hill has reduced taking new business and continues to produce super accurate rifle barrels. This shows in every shipment that comes through the door.

I receive a lot of questions about Vortex optics. Some people seem to think Vortex is a new company just coming on the optic scene. I have had customers state I can’t afford those Vortex optics. Every customer ask how they compare to other Optics ie. Leupold, Nikon, Nightforce.
Vortex optics as been in the optic business since 2002 but they have been in the outdoor retail business since 1986. So they are no stranger to the needs of serious enthusiast. Vortex is owned by Dan and Margie Hamilton of Middleton, WI. They have 4 sons that are involved in every aspect of the company. I had the pleasure of meeting this family at SHOT show 2016 and was blown away.
Vortex makes an optic for every application. They make quality affordable AR optics like the 1-6 Strike eagle and the Strike fire red dot. They have several less expensive rifle scopes like the Crossfire 2 and Diamondback Line. These scopes cover everything from Varmint Hunting (https://www.vortexoptics.com/product/crossfire-II-6-24×50-ao-riflescope-with-v-plex-moa-reticle) to just a quality optic for your hunting rig https://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-diamondback-3-5-10×50-riflescope-v-plex-reticle They also produce some of the most amazing american made optics of the market. Vortex is making a big push to make more optics in America and they started with the AMG 6-24×50 https://www.vortexoptics.com/category/razor_hd_amg_riflescope and it is an unbelievable optic!
Every Vortex line has its differences. From the Crossfire 2 to the Razor line every scope compares to each other differently. Vortex differs from other optic companies in several ways. One is the overwhelming amount of options you recieve with a Vortex Scope. You can have Milradian adjustments or MOA Adjustments. A shooter can choose reticle illumination or standard. Vortex offers Zero Stop shims in the PST line that bump the option list above several comparable companies. Another big difference with Vortex is the Lifetime, transferable, no questions ask warranty. This is not a send it to us wait 3 months and we give you the option to buy at a discounted price warranty. This is truly stand behind your product warranty. I personally have only come across user error problems with these optics.
I shoot Vortex optics because they are the best period. I have shot and owned tons of different optics and Vortex is a one stop optic company that stands behind their product. Vortex is making a real push to make American made optics not just assembled in America. If you have any questions on optics or Vortex feel free to contact us! Keep a look out for Vortex product reviews and demos in the near future.
Match reports
Ozark Mountain Long Range Match
The Ozark Long range match was held in Arkansas out of Aplena , AR. The directors Jeff Badley and John Keeter provided an unbelievable venue for a great match. Ranges varied from 100 Yards to 1000 Yards with targets engaged from many different and awkward positions. The wind was very rough gusting up to 25 MPH. The way the range was setup when the lower 7 stages were finished the shooters moved to the upper range with a complete different wind direction. Jeff and John did a great job keeping everything moving with very little down time. The toughest stage was a 792 Yard full IPSC target engaged off 2 concrete barricades. Positioning on this stage seemed solid with a Armageddon gear large bag on the rear for support. The big challenge was the wind calls and a full value crosswind ranging from 12-18 mph. My best stage was of course a prone stage! The headhunter stage was prone engaging 5 headhunter targets (6” circle) at 385, 400, and 425 through and over a car. The wind call on this stage was zero due to the direction that you were shooting. I cleaned the stage with 1 bonus point. Justin did a great job with pictures from the match. I look forward to many more matches at this venue! What a place!
